Houston Area Nursing
Schools & Programs
There are several educational
paths one may take to become a nurse in the Greater Houston
Area. Below is a list
of Houston Area Nursing schools and links to the
corresponding Nursing School's website.
Note that "ADN" is a degree
for RN- Registered Nurse.
General Nursing School
Information:
LVN programs are usually
around one year long and some don't require prerequisite
courses. Some LVN's choose to complete a LVN to RN
transition course in which they are usually able to skip a
general nursing class or two depending on what nursing
school they attend. There's also a Paramedic to RN
transition program offered at some nursing schools.
San Jacinto College Central offers this transition program.
All RN programs require
prerequisite course work.
The pre-nursing
course work for ADN programs can typically be completed in
one year.
ADN is a two year program and
BSN is a four year program. Although, both degrees
have approximately the same amount of time spent in
"Nursing" classes. The BSN does include an extra
nursing class or two depending on which school you attend.
For the most part, the BSN programs require a lot more
prerequisite classes (usually around two years worth) before attending the nursing portion of
your degree. Pay/Salary is usually the same for RN's
regardless of whether you have an Associate's Degree or
Bachelor's Degree. A BSN is usually desired by nurses
that want to move into management or continue their
education in a master's nursing program. Master's
prepared nurses have more career options available to them
including upper level management and teaching/instructor
positions.
